Course Objectives, Prerequisites, and Assumptions

Course Objectives:

  1. Understand the language of the World Wide Web - become familiar with the terms that are used to describe it.
  2. Understand what good standards are for design of World Wide Web pages, and look at some examples of good and bad design.
  3. Learn and practice the use of web page development tools, such as editors and graphics converters.
  4. Learn the HTML code (tags, document structure, required elements, and good web practices).
  5. Understand the underlying directory structure for the DCN's web, and learn some important UNIX commands for managing your web files.
  6. Understand the security implications for maintaining web pages in your own account.
  7. Know where some good references and resources are for learning more about web page development, or getting answers to your questions.

Course Prerequisites/Assumptions:

  1. Attendees already have a DCN account.
  2. Attendees already have the DCN-supported PC Internet tools installed, and are familiar with their use.
  3. Attendees have experience using electronic mail, and a web browser.
  4. All handouts and resource materials for this class will be made available on line, on the web, so that attendees can refer to them later (these will also be good resources for people who essentially want to go through an autotutorial process without attending class).
