Board Meeting Minutes

March 11, 2003

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by Stephen Souza on Tuesday, March 11, 2003. This meeting was held at the home of Betty Weir.

Present (10 total) were:

Vice President: Barbara Slemmons

Past President: Bob Bockwinkel,
Board members: Julia Sanchez, Jim Pollock, Jerry Lester, Tony Gruska and Mike Syvanen

The Secretary arrived at 7:09 PM and had missed the first 9 minutes of the meeting.


TREASURER'S REPORT

The club has $1,809.69 in the checking account. We have $3000 and $4000 in CDs. We have a total of $8,809.66 in the bank for the club.

The roster of the club is currently 68 housholds and 27 individual memberships that have paid their dues. Betty went through the membership list and found that there are 318 individuals on our mailing list. It was suggested that the club send a letter to the 223 people that have not paid their dues, some since 1999.

Barbara Slemmons made a motion that we send a letter and a last call for membership. This motion was seconded by Julia Sanchez. The motion was passed with one member abstaining.


TONY BERNHARD EVENT

Most Yolo County Officials have been invited by phone or e-mail. There are a total of 45 to 46 who have been invited, including 14 that were past electeds. Jerry Adler was telephoned and invited as a Republican that turned Democrat.

At the event a resolution from the California Legislature made by Mike Machado and Lois Wolk will be presented to Tony. The Democrat Club will present Tony a plaque noting his 16 years of service to Yolo County.

The wireless microphone will be rented by Richard Yamagata for the event as passed by resolution at the previous meeting. The food categories have been moved around for the potluck event. Bob is in charge of the Martinelli's and will pick up 12 bottles. Plastic flutes are to be purchased for the event from Sam's Club not Costco. The person with the Sam's Club membership was to pick up the flutes.

Press release for the event was to be a picture taken on the 17th to be in the paper on the 19th featuring Tony. It was suggested that Betsy Marchand be asked to be also in the picture for this event.

Shampooing the carpet was again discussed. Bob and Stephen will shampoo the carpet. Richard volunteered to show up if telephoned.


CHAMPAIGNE BRUNCH

This event will be held on Mother's Day in May. Betty will call and set-up the time with the Cook's. It was suggested that we invited the two elected Mikes as guest speakers.


FOURTH OF JULY

It was discussed that the central committee would like to co-sponsor the booth this year. The booth will consist of two parts, the Democrat Club Tiki Room serving non-alcoholic mixed ice drinks and a gaming dunk tank. The dunk tank will have people wearing masks of infamous Republican electeds.

It was asked how much would it cost to rent the dunk tank? It was also noted that the club can rent a frozen margarita dispenser. It was stated that if these ideas were implemented, that the Democrat Club would extend its booth hours through the firework display.

Barbara made the motion that the Central Committee be invited to participate in both the financial commitment and the labor plans. This was seconded by Tony. This motion passed unaminously.


ICE CREAM SOCIAL

This event is once again floating for Jerry Kaneko will be in town the last week of August and the first week of September. It will be either on August 28th or September 2nd. Stephen said that he would contact Jerry Kaneko and settle on the date.


YOLO COUNTY FAIR

This event is from the 13th through the 17th of August. The club has committed to taking Saturday, the 16th. We will have time slot sign-ups closer to the event.


END OF SUMMER BARBEQUE

Stephen said that he will talk to Robin to find out the date for this event. Tentatively, we are talking the end of September. We will once again will plan to Oysters and Shrip for the barbecue.


NEW BUSINESS

Bob Bockwinkel made the motion that the Democrat Club give $100 to Mike Thompson in support of his fundraiser at the Heidrick Museum on the 26th. This motion was seconded by Tony and passed unaminously.

Joyce Wilson is now at home and being take care well care of by Barry. Barbara was going to check to see if she was well enough to receive visitors.

Bob Bockwinkel brought up the subject of the party at the Kaplan's on the 5th of December. The 5th has been secured as the date for this event.

Mike brought up that there is a peace demonstration in San Francisco on the 15th. Details can be found at the Davis Peace Coalition web site.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:16 by Stephen.
