CURRICULUM

Language Arts

This year our class will pilot two new Spanish Language Art Programs. These two new programs are adapted to the new Common Core Standards. Our Language Art curriculum integrates reading which teaches vocabulary comprehesion, different kind of genre (opinion, narrative and informational), different points of view, spelling, grammar, the mechanics and usage of the Spanish language. Activities are centered on reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Guided reading is also an important part of Language Arts. During this time students read in small groups at their own reading level. An aide who is trained in guided reading will also assist our class from Monday through Friday for approximately 50 minutes . When students are not reading with the reading aide or myself they will be working in literacy centers. The main goal is to have all students reading, writing and speaking at grade level fluency .

Mathematics

This year is the 2nd year we are implementing a new Math program called "enVisions". Math instruction will emphasize computation, mathematical concepts, and problem solving. Instruction will be facilitated via a hands-on approach through the use of manipulatives. Students will practice computational skills by completing math exercises and practicing mental math through especific math programs like "Number Talks" and math games. It is my goal to provide students with instruction and practice based upon their particular needs.

Science

The science program we use is FOSS (Full Option Science System), published by the Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley. FOSS is popular with the students, in part because it is a hands-on activity-based science program, and I want to make the best use of all the materials at my disposal. Students will receive science instruction in life sciences (animal life cycles), physical sciences (balance and motion), and earth sciences (fossils, rocks and minerals).

Social Studies

Second grade uses the social studies adoption Reflexiones: La gente que conocemos. We will discuss the relationships and interdependence of people; people of the past and their influence on our lives today; people who have made a difference in the world, and those who continue to make a difference today.

Music, Art, P.E.

Students will learn to express themselves through different media. The emphasis in P.E. will be on movement, which will be done through games, international dances, and cooperative activities. I will integrate art throughout the curriculum and I will try to engage students to enjoy academic subjects using art and their amazing creativity and imagination. Also I would like to make reference to some important painters during the year such as Leonardo DaVinci, Picasso, Miro, Frida Kahlo, Dalí, etc

Computers

We will learn how to use the computer as a tool and as a media to learn about other subjects such as math, science, social studies and art. We will likely use the computer lab once a week depending on our weekly schedule. We will be using Cromebooks in the class for especific projects.

English

Starting in January, students will receive 40 minutes of English instruction working on English reading and writing skills.
