It was early in 2008 – right after I’d spent two weeks in India and
almost two weeks in Paris and really rang up the big bucks on my
charge card – that I was laid-off from my job at the local newspaper.
A change in jobs was way overdue, but I hesitated to take the step
given the bad and increasingly bad economy. Fortunately, I found
another job within a few weeks and on April 1, 2008, became the
executive director of International House Davis.
I was already a member of the I-House board and that gave me the
entree I needed. Many well-qualified people with much more experience
than I had applied for the job so I’m happy I got it.
I have just begun my fourth year as ED of International House and I
love it. International House is an independent nonprofit – not part of the University of California at Davis and not part of the City of
Davis although we are funded by both. We put on classes, dinners,
lectures, parties, barbecues, movies, dances – you name it – if it has
an international component, we do it here.
I have a spectacular assistant named Namdi Barnes, who is a lot
like Radar O’Riley when it comes to anticipating what needs to be
done, when and how. In fact, things are going along so well at I-House
that I have decided to return to my long-neglected book column.
Over the past several years I have made a lot of quilts and watched
a lot of movies. It’s now time to return to the printed word.
So, please, let me know what you’re reading and what you think I
should read. I have a free hand now – I can write about anything and
anybody. So let’s go! I anticipate that a new column will appear
monthly. My grateful thanks go to Richard Yamagata of Davis Virtual
Markets who files my columns and keeps the web page running.
