Notes for John CHESTER [Foreman, Lambeth Water Works] |
Death notice of wife Jane gives address as Lambeth Waterworks, Crown Lane, Streatham - as shown on the Letter of Administration concerning wife Jane's estate on her death.
Streatham is in outskirts of London in the County of Surrey.
The 1881 census of British Isles gives dwelling as Crown Lane House at Reservoir. Census place was Croydon The reservoir was the Norwood Reservoir was on the Croydon (south) side of Crown Lane just on the left before you get to Ryecroft Road. In the 1889 edition of the Ward's Directory for the Norwood area, listed under Crown Lane, John Chester is listed as follows: John Chester, Foreman of Turncocks, Norwood Reservoir, Lambeth Waterworks.
I think that the reservoir belonged to Lambeth Waterworks until the Croydon Water Bill of 1891 and then it may have become part of Croydon. |
