| BusinessCalifornia’s businesses range from owner-operated firms to huge
companies with thousands of employees. The reasons for locating these
businesses in California vary from making a living in one’s home town to the
siting of national and multi-national companies that want to take advantage
of our natural resources, transportation system, and growing communities. All
of these diverse enterprises, however, have common concerns about state
regulatory and tax policies that both directly and indirectly affect profitability.
It was clearly demonstrated during former Governor Wilson’s administration
that reducing the burden of government encourages businesses to grow and
allows California’s workers to benefit from increased employment and
wages. So it is very disturbing to see the hundreds of legislative and
regulatory actions over the past five years that are designed to restrict and
tax business activity. In fact, the
workers compensation rates, health care mandates, and new regulatory fees and
permits imposed by the current legislature are driving businesses and the
jobs that go with them out of California.
This
trend must be reversed to ensure that California businesses and their employees can both look forward
to a prosperous and secure future. It is also essential to understand that
business, not government, creates wealth and prosperity. |
