Poems and Thoughts    by Frank Maurer

A Brief History of Cyrus the Great and the Jews.

Cyrus the Great was a Persian and a Zoroastrian.
The story goes, that he liberated the Jews,
From their Babylonian captivity, about 550 BC,
To return to their homeland and rebuild their temple.
Cyrus freed many other exiles of various religions.
There are many accounts of this in the Book of Isaiah in the Torah.
For this accomplishment, Cyrus is venerated as a messiah;
The only non-Jew (he being Persian) to be held in this regard in Judaism.
So the Jews had at least one long-sought-for messiah,
But so long ago, that his interactions are forgotten by most.
Thus the Jews' later continued the search for their massiah;
It has remained unbroken to this day..
Consider also the present history with the continual conflict,
Of Muslims and Jews, all from the same territory,
But now so different from the long past with their only declared messiah.
Ah, history can be so affirming for some, or threatening for others!
